Spammers sending schools and colleges malware disguised as ‘credentials’

Version imprimable, PDF et e-mail

The honeypots at Barracuda Labs have detected a major new spam campaign that is targeting schools with a malware backdoor disguised as “school credentials.”  While a four paragraph email is not necessarily a traditional way to apply for admission, schools are in competition for top students and it's very possible that an admission officer might be more curious than suspicious of this unusual attack.  The malware dropper is an .SCR file, the extension Windows uses for Screen Saver executables.  Do not run such files – if it is not text, don't open it.
