BSides Las Vegas is coming up this week, which makes this a great time to talk about BSides and why we love these events.
BSides Las Vegas is an Information / Security conference that is 100% volunteer organized. Volunteers, donors, sponsors, and other members of the community help put on an event that is completely free to the public. The philosophy here is that information should be free, and the presentations should be collaborative. Everyone has the opportunity to contribute to the conversations.
The conversations aren't just about the latest high-profile security topics. The BSidesLV website says it best:
Presenters at our conference are engaging our participants and getting the discussions started on the “Next Big Thing”, not preaching at you from the podium about last month’s news.
With tracks as diverse as “Common Ground,” focusing on non-tech issues of importance to the community, “Underground,” our Off-The-Record series that lets you delve deeper into the subjects that are better-off discussed Away-From-Keys, behind closed doors, and “Proving Ground,” our mentorship program for first-time presenters, YOU are the reason for this new era of Information Sharing and Teamwork.
And this year, there's an extra bonus:
We are proud to announce that we've teamed-up with Passwordscon.org!! Per Thorsheim and team will be utilizing the Siena room to host two tracks over two days. The conferences are both compatible and complimentary and your BSidesLV badge will allow you access to their talks and vice-versa. Two conferences for the one low, low price of – FREE as in beer AND free as in speech!!
BSides LV is a part of the larger BSides movement, which describes itself as “a community-driven framework for building events for and by information security community members.”
Sound cool? We think so. This is our fourth year as Stellar Sponsors of BSidesLV, and we have supported BSides events in other cities as well. Detroit, Atlanta, Austin, San Francisco … we've been there with BSides. It's a great way for us to give back to the security community.
BSides Las Vegas takes place August 5th & 6th, 2014 at Tuscany Suites & Casino, Las Vegas, Nevada. There's no pre-registration; badges are first-come, first-serve. The capacity at Tuscany almost assures that BSidesLV will not run out of room for you!
