Many of you know that Michael Hughes left us last month to begin a new chapter in his life. As our former SVP of Worldwide Sales and Services, Michael interacted with people and built friendships all over the world. Based on the work he did while he was with us, we can be sure that his friendships with the people involved in the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) are among his most treasured.
A Thank You to Michael Hughes from the CAF Family
Michael Hughes has served as a leader by example and provided tremendous impact to the success of the Challenged Athletes Foundation’s reach in the Bay Area. We are grateful for his time at Barracuda and the support we’ve gained through his leadership!
Michael's CAF resume includes: former Chair of the Back to Back NorCal Ride, leading the Barracuda sponsorship of the Back to Back NorCal Ride and Million Dollar Challenge, creating and leading the annual CAF fundraising rides Tour de Taco and Christmas Coma, and most recently serving on the planning committee for the Celebration of Heart event in San Francisco.
Michael’s service has significantly impacted many challenged athletes, a few who were very eager to speak up and offer their gratitude:'Michael is a CAF superhero ... I am honored that he wanted to be on my team.' [email protected]Click To Tweet

“Michael is a CAF superhero combining the ability to serve as event chair with all the necessary convention yet have the ability (or compulsion) to be childlike in his enthusiasm for having fun. He came with his son Tommy to crew for me at the 24hr World Time Trial Championships in Borrego Springs. We had a crap race which included a broken bike, an unused deck of motivational cards he brought to propel me into each next hour of riding, and a long, tiring, but somehow fun failed qualification attempt. Through it all, I was [still] honored that he wanted to be on my team (and I still have the cards).'Michael, you've been such a powerful CAF influence in NorCal during your time at Barracuda! Thank you for all you've done' ~Mary RobertsClick To Tweet

“Michael has always been such an enthusiastic supporter of CAF, especially in growing the Northern California community. I remember meeting him on one of CAF's rides and noting how he was so warm and inviting. He's been like a brother to me throughout the years-always available to listen and give advice. He even opened up his home to me the night before the Christmas Coma ride since I was coming from out of town. Wishing you all the success in your next adventure, Michael. Hope to ride with you again soon!”'Michael, thank you for being you. Thank you for your kind heart, warm personality and genuine caring about others' well-being.' [email protected]Click To Tweet
6x Blind Golf US Champion, 2x World Champion
When I first met you at the Barracuda Championship in Reno/Tahoe, my Dad, Ellen and I fell in love with you and your positive energy. We immediately felt like family, and that was one of the coolest experiences I’ve ever gotten to be a part of.
Mark and I truly enjoyed being a part of the NorCal Back-to-Back ride with you. When we had dinner with you, Tommy, his friend Jeremy and a couple other folks after the first day, the idea was floated out there that you could be my tandem captain the next day. I had a blast cycling and chatting with you. The only part that wasn’t fun was when you rode right next to some large bushes and didn’t forewarn the blind guy to duck! I got whacked by two bushes and you seemed to come out unscathed.
Michael, thank you for being you. Thank you for your kind heart, warm personality and genuine caring about others' well-being.
You’re the man!”'Michael has raised a significant amount of money for those with physical disabilities to allow them the ability to be involved with sports. I am personally honored to know him.' ~Sean SimonsonClick To Tweet
“Michael Hughes and his family are a tremendous—and quite possibly the biggest supporters of the Challenged Athletes Foundation in Northern California. Michael has raised a significant amount of money for those with physical disabilities to allow them the ability to be involved with sports. I am personally honored to know a man who has [so selflessly] given his time and effort. Thank you, Michael Hughes, for all that you have done and all that you continue to do for us at CAF. I look forward to more cycling adventures with you!”
Michael may have moved on from Barracuda, but his love for CAF is still with us. We look forward to many more good times with the CAF family. Ride on!
